From my readings as well as actual experience with this Web 2.0 tool, I compiled a list of characteristices of Wikis:
- no special trainging or software is required
- everything ( editing, posting) happens in real time
- creation is easy and straightforward
- wikis exist in the clouds
- ability to incorporate sounds, movies and multimedia presentations
- it is a group data base as opposed to one created by an individual
These characteristics make the wiki a userfriendly tool that encourages collaboration.
As a teacher, I believe that giving my students the opportunity to engage in collaboration through a wiki would not only encourage them to read and think critically, but it can also boost confidence when they realise that they are active participants its creation.
I too love the collaborative nature of wikis. It makes the work of teachers so easy when there is a tool that not only allows students to create documents, but also allows them to add to documents. Students feel a sense of ownership when they are able to add to a document that the class is working on. This would in turn would lead to more motivated writers and eventually independent writers.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you khadine.A wiki is a collaborative webspace where anyone can edit or add any content yhat has been published.Users work collaboratively to build communities as they work on projects. They can also be used for collaborative writing, such as:class newspapers, story telling, poetry, and so forth
