I am a Social Studies teacher at a public secondary school. My love for reading has led me to this field. In the first month at this school, I experienced 'culture shock' since I never came across such a large number of teenagers who lacked the fundamental reading skills. As it stands, my main focus in teaching my students ( at all levels) is to develop their skills and confidence as readers. The main implication of this is that many times I dont complete the given syllabus as well as I have to set my own examinations since my students are not moving as fast as the other classes.
I admit that I hold some reservations about persuing higher education. I see too often that gaining higher qualitifcation take you away from the classroom. However, I hope that becoming a reading specialist would allow me to be a part of the change so badly needed in our education system.
